He was a sports writer for the Waterbury Republican for about 10 years. During this time he managed the Thomaston Ponies, a semi-pro football team which won state titles and played against the West End of Bristol. He became manager of the West End Football Team of Bristol during their heydays between the mid-to-late 1930’s. These teams played the best in the East and more than held their own.

He was also a highly regarded baseball umpire and was a train ride away from becoming a professional. Instead, he took employment with New Departure where he became the PR man for the manufacturing company. During this time, he also was part of a Bristol Sports organization which brought professional teams with Hall of Famers to Muzzy Field, the Boston Braves and New York Yankees in baseball and a football team with Don Hudson, a Hall of Fame NFL player who was regarded as the best during this era.

He was also involved with New Departure Sports which included bowling leagues and what have you during the 1930’s – 1960’s. New Departure hosted numerous sports programs for employees, including bowling, softball (men and women), basketball (both men and women) as well as others. He played an important part with these in-house league teams and those who played outside, such as the men’s softball team in the old Bristol Industrial League.

He socialized with the best of Bristol sports during his stay with New Departure, approximately 30 years, while a Newington resident at the time. He wrote a full-page essay on New Departure sports for the 100th Anniversary of the Bristol Press in 1971.

From the day he graduated high school to the day he died, in his 90’s during the 1990’s, he was interested and reminisced often with Bob Montgomery about the good old days.
