John Fortunato
2010 Chuck McCarthy Award Recipient

Our own John Fortunato, co-founder of the Bristol Sports Hall of Fame,
was honored by the Bristol Tramps at its annual dinner held on Friday,
April 9, 2010 at the Clarion Inn.

Upon being introduced by the evening's MC, Maryellen Holden, John received a standing ovation.

A longtime Parks Commissioner in Bristol, John was instrumental in having
an area in back of Muzzy Field named in honor of Tramps founder
Julie Larese. The section of road is known as "Larese Way."

John's biggest accomplishment may well have been the Bristol Sports
Hall of Fame (BSHOF). He came up with the idea in 1996 and when he met up with Bristol Press sportswriter Bob Montgomery, the two agreed to "do it" and they did.

John was and has been the heart and sole of the BSHOF since it was
established in 1997. His ideas and direction helped bring this
organization to what many believe is the best sports hall of fame in
the state. It honors those of all ages, both male and female, with its numerous programs held throughout the year.

John was key in helping direct the organization as one of its founders and
longtime vice-president. Today, the BSHOF is well-respected in sports
circles.
