TELL US MORE

As a lifelong resident of the city of Bristol, it is truly an honor to be considered for nomination into the Bristol Sports Hall of Fame.  As a youngster, I was an active participant in Bristol sports.  I spent many days at the Bristol Boys Club and Rockwell Park competing in various leagues.  I was fortunate to have men like Jack Carpenter, Bill McCowey, George Redman, and Rex Hamilton give me the guidance and structure that I still rely on today.  I knew early on that I wanted to be a coach, like they were.  One thing that I’m very proud of is that my grammar school baseball team, Clara T. O’Connell won the city championship in 1964.  I can still remember the names of the players and Jack Carpenter’s steal sign, jingling his car keys.  Although never a star player at BCHS, I certainly received a solid sports education from the coaches there.  Gene Zahnke, Bill McGoey and again, George Redman were excellent role models and coaches.  Much of what I learned from these men and the competitive nature that I possess has made me the successful coach that I am today.  To them, I am forever grateful.

In the last 15 years, I have had very close ties to Bristol Sports.  I had the pleasure of coaching the BCHS Girls Soccer Team from 1984-89.  More importantly, I had the opportunity to watch my son, Andrew grow and develop as an athlete and person from numerous Bristol sports programs.  I had the opportunity to coach him at the Boys Club, in little league, with Vita’s Market and with the American Legion baseball team in the 1997 American Legion World Series.  As good as Bristol sports have been to me, they’ve been even better for my son.  My family and I are truly proud to be associated with Bristol sports.  Although much of my success has come in a town nearby, I can honestly say that it is a result of growing up in no finer a sports town than Bristol, Connecticut.  I am truly flattered to be nominated.
