at St. Anthonys School and St. Anthonys High
School. In 1953, St. Anthonys High School won
the New England Catholic High Basketball championship and
Tony was selected on the All-Star team for that
tournament. He was also selected to the All-Star
team in 1954 at the same tournament. His scoring average
was 14.5 points per game throughout his 4 year high
school career. After high school Tony played fast
pitch softball with the Wallace Barnes team in the
Bristol league prior to his enlistment in the US Army in
1956. During his Army days, he played and
coached the 8th Cavalry, 1st
Cavalry Division basketball team in Korea and Japan. Team
record was 29-3. He was the second scoring leader in the
league with a scoring average of 23 points per game and
was written up in the Stars and Stripes
Newspaper for his accomplishments. Upon return to the United States,
Tony was transferred to the Connecticut Army National
Guard and also attended the University of Connecticut,
Waterbury Branch where he was a starter on the basketball
and averaged 18.5 points per game. He also played for
many military basketball teams in the late 1950s and
early 1960s. During this time, Tony scored 50 points or
getter in 5 games. He also started playing Slo-Pitch
softball with a league in Plainville and then in Bristol
where he was the shortstop for the sportsmans
Café. This team won several city titles and participated
in many regional tournaments. His playing days ended in
1976 after an arm injury. He was an assistant coach in McCabe
Waters Little League farm Team. Tony Savino joined the Bristol
Tramps Sports Reunion Committee in 1996 and serves as the
Executive Director. |
